Ullswater Community College has an established reputation for producing very high standards in Dance. Dance is a powerful and expressive subject which encourages students to develop their creative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacity, whatever their previous experience in the subject.
KS3: At KS3 students have the opportunity to experience Dance, Drama and Music on a termly rotation based on a specific theme. A diverse range of topics and themes are taught which include: technique, choreography and performance. Practical work is also coupled with many opportunities to appraise, analyse and evaluate their own and others work, including professional pieces. Within each discipline students study two units that allow them to gain the knowledge and skills needed to pursue the subject at KS4. KS4: At KS4, GCSE Dance can be taken as an option. Students continue to develop their technical, expressive and choreography skills throughout the course as well as learning about appreciation skills, enabling students to watch, analyse and understand how dance is choreographed. KS5: At Key Stage 5 students are provided with the opportunity to study the BTEC Level 3 in Performing Arts (Dance) which is equivalent to one A Level. A BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate will help prepare students for a career in the performing arts industry, developing their knowledge and skills as well as giving them a feel for the demands of working in the industry. Students will explore a range of styles and techniques including: Classical Ballet, Contemporary and Jazz Dance. Practical skills will be delivered through workshops and small and large scale performances supported by a team of specialist staff. All students will be expected to keep detailed self-reflective logs of their activities as well as carrying out research tasks, evaluations of their work and reviews. This qualification offers a professional and highly practical experience that will become part of the college’s own Dance company. |
